They say the best way to learn is from those who’ve walked the path before you. Over the past semester, as part of George Brown’s Digital Marketing Management program, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in a seminar series that brought in professionals from various corners of the digital marketing world. These sessions weren't just lectures; they were deep dives into real-life experiences, career paths, and the wisdom from working in the industry. Each speaker shared stories about their educational and professional journeys, offered valuable advice, and even guided us through case studies emulating real-world scenarios.
Before this class, I didn’t fully grasp the true variety of career paths available in digital marketing. From agency life to global corporations, from consulting to entrepreneurship, the possibilities felt endless. It was eye-opening to see how vast and dynamic this field is, and it made me genuinely excited about my future. The seminar not only gave me clarity about where I could see myself working but also inspired me to dream bigger about what’s possible in this industry.
Stories That Stuck with Me
While every speaker brought unique insights, several really stood out and inspired me.
For example Danielle Humilde, a former student of George Brown’s Digital Marketing program, started her career journey as an entrepreneur. Using the skills and confidence she gained from her studies, she launched her own business as a digital marketing manager for small businesses. Hearing about how she boosted online engagement for her clients, helped their brands grow, and navigated the challenges of entrepreneurship left a strong impression on me. I admired her adaptability and open-mindedness to forge her own path, especially one that isn’t as conventional for recent graduates.
Another story that inspired me was Cathy McKnight’s. As VP of Strategy and Consulting at The Content Advisory, Cathy spoke about the importance of company culture and size in shaping your work experience. She emphasized the value of finding the right fit, being open to new opportunities, and not being afraid to pivot when something isn’t working. Her professional journey encouraged me to think critically about my own career path and to embrace change when it feels necessary.
The Biggest Takeaway: Stay Open and Keep Learning
One of the recurring themes throughout the seminar was that career paths are rarely linear. Many of the speakers started in one role or industry only to pivot completely and find greater fulfillment. This message really resonated with me. It’s a reminder to stay open-minded, explore what excites me, and understand that every role - whether it’s a dream job or a stepping stone - comes with valuable lessons.
But I would say the most important lesson I learned was the value of networking. Of course I’ve always heard how crucial networking is, but seeing how connections directly impacted the speakers’ career success really drove this point home. I realized that the peers currently in my classes today might be the ones I collaborate with or turn to for opportunities in the future. I’ve realized that networking isn’t just about reaching out to established professionals; it’s about building a community with those around you. I’m grateful that I’ve met such a great group of students and friends throughout this program, who I know I will keep in touch with as we all navigate the beginning of our digital marketing careers.
Putting Networking into Practice
This semester, I pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone and engage in networking opportunities. I attended the George Brown Career Fair as well as other marketing events around the city. Initially, the idea of walking into a room full of strangers was intimidating, but I quickly realized that everyone else was there for the same reason—to connect. Once I let go of the pressure and approached it as a chance to learn and share stories, the experience became really enjoyable.
Some of the connections I made at these events have led to LinkedIn connections, which in turn have sparked insightful coffee chats. These conversations have been invaluable for gaining a better understanding of the industry and the variety of roles available.
On LinkedIn, I started following groups like Girls in Marketing and professionals whose careers I admire. Exploring their posts and profiles has given me insight into the latest industry trends and how different career paths unfold. I’ve also subscribed to newsletters like Monday Girl and the Canadian Marketing Association to stay up-to-date with developments in the field.
Staying Positive Through Challenges
Balancing schoolwork with the search for a co-op placement has been no small feat. Job hunting can feel like a full-time job in itself, with its fair share of rejections and setbacks. One thing I’ve learned is the importance of staying open-minded and only applying for roles that genuinely interest me.
Rejections, while tough, have taught me that failure is a crucial part of growth. Each “no” gets you closer to the right “yes.” I try to remind myself that with patience and perseverance, things always seem to work out the way they’re meant to.
Networking Tips That Worked for Me
If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to anyone building their network, it’s to be authentic. I’ve learnt that people connect with people, not polished or perfect versions of ourselves. Show up as you are, and don’t be afraid to share your genuine interests and passions.
I also learned that networking is a two-way street. It’s not just about asking for advice or opportunities—it’s about building a relationship where both parties can learn and benefit from each other.
Final Reflections
This seminar series has been one of the most impactful experiences of my time in the Digital Marketing Management program. It’s not just the lessons I learned or the people I met—it’s the confidence I’ve gained in my ability to navigate this industry.
