6 Tips for Your First Open Mic Night

Open mic nights are a fantastic opportunity for performers of all skill levels to showcase their talents in front of a supportive audience.  For those looking to rediscover their passion for singing or playing an instrument, open mic nights provide a unique chance to gain confidence, improve performing skills, and and have fun in a low-pressure setting.

Interested in performing at an open mic but not sure how to prepare? Here are 6 important tips to keep in mind before performing at your first open mic night.

1. Research the venue. Before performing at an open mic, it's important to research the venue. Some open mic venues are "coffee-house" style, while others are more like jam sessions with backing bands. It might be a good idea to visit the open mic before you plan to perform, to understand the atmosphere and the types of performances that take place. Another important thing to keep in mind is the sign-up requirements (how far in advance are you required to sign-up? Is it an online sign up or in person?).

2. Bring the equipment you need. Ensure you bring all the necessary equipment for your performance. While some venues provide basic equipment, it doesn't hurt to call the venue in advance to know what they provide. Think about whether you require an instrument, amplifier, stand, cables, etc.

3. Choose 3-4 songs you're comfortable singing/playing. A typical open mic night allows performers to share 3 songs. For your first time, it’s best to choose songs you’re comfortable with. Pick 3-4 songs that you know well and have practiced thoroughly to ensure you feel confident even if the nerves kick in on stage.

4. Be ready with spare songs. Have a few extra songs prepared. Sometimes other performers might choose the same song, and although this is not a problem, you may want to choose a different song to avoid repetition. You may also be offered to perform for longer, or return to the stage to perform again depending on the night.

5. Remember it's just for fun. The main goal of open mic nights are to enjoy yourself! No one is expecting a perfect performance - everyone at an open mic knows it's an open mic.

6. Support other performers. Open mic nights thrive on community support. Try and stay until the end of all the night to show your support to other performers.
