Reviewing Open Mics Around the GTA

Welcome to my blog series, where I share my experiences and perspectives performing at different open mics around the Greater Toronto Area as a 25 year old casual singer/guitar player.   

Episode 1: Oakville's Temple Bar

If you're looking for a relaxed and supportive atmosphere to share your music, comedy, or poetry, Oakville's Temple Bar is the place to be. This pub, bar, and restaurant hosts open mic nights every Thursday at 8 PM, welcoming performers of all kinds. I've now performed at Temple Bar several times, and so far I have only had positive things to report. 

The setup is straightforward: as you enter the bar there's an area on the floor set up with instruments, a mic, and a stand, and you can choose to play with a backtrack if you don't play an instrument. It's a no-pressure environment where you can sign up when you arrive, and there's no competition—just a small, friendly crowd and a supportive vibe. The staff are great, making you feel at ease, and the cozy setting makes it easy to relax and enjoy the evening.

One thing to note is that the place can be a bit quiet at times, which can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's perfect for easing into the open mic scene without feeling overwhelmed. On the other hand, you might find yourself performing to a smaller audience than expected.

Overall, I think Temple Bar is a fantastic spot to dip your toe into the world of open mic nights. Whether you're a seasoned performer or just starting, the laid-back, welcoming atmosphere makes it an ideal place to share your talents. Plus, it's a great way to connect with other local artists and maybe even find some inspiration for your next performance!
