How do you turn uncertainty into opportunity? In our latest seminar at George Brown College’s Digital Marketing Management program, we had the opportunity to hear from Danielle Humilde, a former student who has navigated an inspiring path from entrepreneur to regional digital manager at a global company. Danielle's journey in digital marketing highlighted the resilience and adaptability needed to thrive in the field, as well as the importance of trusting your skills and stepping boldly into new challenges. Hearing about her challenges and achievements was inspiring, especially as someone preparing to enter the digital marketing industry.
Danielle began her digital marketing career by embracing an ambitious challenge: founding her own digital strategy firm shortly after graduation. While she had limited professional experience in the field at the time, she dove in headfirst, relying on the skills she gained in school and learning the rest along the way. One story that stood out to me was her work with her first client, Ahimsa Eco Solutions, a small eco-friendly company primarily selling through farmers' markets and online. With limited resources, Danielle implemented a simple but effective digital marketing strategy. By creating a social media calendar and standardizing their online presence, she managed to increase their audience by 300%. Her adaptability and determination demonstrated that impactful results are possible even with limited resources.
Danielle's experience made me reconsider my own hesitations about entrepreneurship. While the idea of starting my own business has always felt daunting, Danielle’s story demonstrated that success often requires taking risks and diving into new challenges, even if you don’t have all the answers. I often wonder whether I would be experienced enough to go out on my own, but Danielle’s journey reminded me that learning and growth are a continuous process. Seeing her impact with Ahimsa Eco Solutions taught me that if you leverage your skills effectively, you can make meaningful contributions, regardless of your level of experience.
One of Danielle’s key pieces of advice was, “Everything is either a lesson or a blessing. Keep an open mind.” This really resonated with me, as I believe that every experience, even those that feel like failures, carries something valuable. Danielle encouraged us to apply this perspective even to our co-op search, suggesting we keep an open mind about roles that may not align perfectly with our interests - as these experiences might help us learn what we enjoy or discover something new.
This advice reminded me of a similar lesson I learned when I started my undergraduate degree in biomedical toxicology. My first year was challenging, and I struggled with my courses, which didn’t match my expectations or interests. At the time, I felt like I was failing, but looking back, that experience taught me the importance of self-awareness and the courage to pivot. When I changed programs, I found a field that was more engaging and aligned with my interests. This taught me that sometimes, unexpected paths can lead to better outcomes.
The seminar also included a case study exercise where we were asked to present website performance metrics to a panel of executives. Danielle emphasized that when presenting data to decision-makers, it’s important to understand what information is the most relevant and important. The exercise was helpful in learning how to distill complex data and communicate it in a digestible way.
I learnt that effectively presenting data requires a strategic approach, and it’s important to highlight the insights that drive decisions. This experience was valuable for learning how to tailor information to the audience, a skill I plan to refine further as I move forward in my career.
Overall, Danielle’s presentation was not just about her career journey, but lessons in resilience, adaptability, and perspective. She demonstrated the power of perseverance and the importance of seizing opportunities, even when the path is uncertain. Danielle’s story is one I’ll carry with me as I continue my journey in digital marketing, with a stronger sense of confidence and openness to new challenges.
